PIP Al & Maureen Bandel, with 40 D.R. Lions delivered to Haiti...water, food, medical supplies

Highlights:
Lions contribution to Haiti earthquake relief has exceeded the Million Dollar level.
PIP Al Brandel & wife, with 40 D.R. Lions delivered water, food and medical supplies to Haiti.

Lions Hope for Haiti has mobilized more than US$1.2 million to date. Lions Hope for Haiti is Lions and LCIF working together to provide relief and hope for the people of Haiti. Lions around the world are responding generously and quickly to the LCIF designated fund for this disaster. Donations are continuing to pour in from individuals, clubs and districts.

LCIF is working directly with Lions of Haiti as well as Lions in neighboring countries to respond to immediate and long-term needs. LCIF Chairperson Al Brandel and his wife Dr. Maureen Murphy led a team of 40 Dominican Republic Lions to deliver water, food and medical supplies into Port au Prince, Haiti on January 22. Supplies were distributed by Haitian Lions and Leos to a hospital and orphanage. Lions are also establishing three tent cities of 200 tents donated by Swedish Lions to provide shelter for those left homeless and relief workers, as well as a clinic and psychiatric assistance.

Chairperson Al also met with local Lions to develop a long-term plan for reconstruction, and a committee of Lions leaders from the area was established to oversee relief efforts. Lions are discussing rebuilding a school and eye clinic.

Lions around the world are also assisting through generous contributions and other aid.
Like other previous disasters, LCIF is not only committed to meeting the immediate needs of the people, but will be working through the Lions in the region to provide relief for years to come. As an example, LCIF is still helping those in South Asia recover from the tsunami, Gulf States recover from Hurricane Katrina and China to rebuild following the earthquake. After other relief organizations have moved out of the area, Lions will still be on the ground, overseeing long-term reconstruction projects.

Similar to other disasters, Lions hope to rebuild homes and hospitals, redevelop the eye care delivery system, human resource support and provide help for disabled, including those disabled as a result of this disaster.

OC Alan Soo>> Haiti Earthquake Relief: Why, When & How

Dear Club Presidents,

Haiti Earthquake Relief: Why, When & How

My fellow Presidents, first and foremost, let me wish you Happy New Year and Happy Holidays as the Chinese New Year is approaching.

My club has recently proposed to DG about making Haiti Earthquake Relief as a District Project. My club Honorary Lion (owner of a group of Restaurants) has initiated by offering to sponsor up to 100 tables of dinner.

Why “Haiti Earthquake Relief” District Project?
1. A terrible earthquake of 7.0 Richter scale had happened at Haiti (a country in the Carribeans). 3 million lost their homes. About 200,000 lost their lives.
2. Haiti is one of the poorest country in the western world.
3. Lions Clubs International has called for all Lions worldwide to respond by contributing to LCIF / Lions Hope For Haiti.
4. Immediate Past International President, Al Brandel (LCIF Chairperson), has appealed for donations and contributions.
5. As our motto is “WE SERVE”, let us do something in the Spirit of Togetherness to help these Haitians to rebuild their lives after this disastrous earthquake.
6. We sow what we reap. As we do good, we will be blessed with more.

When do we send the Money to LCIF?
1. We need to quickly collect the money and send over the money to LCIF for onward transmission for the Haiti Earthquake Relief.
2. We plan to close the Haiti Earthquake Relief fund by 13 February 2010, and transmit all the money to LCIF.
Reason: We need to be FAST in helping these earthquake victims at Haiti.

How can we (Lions Clubs) contribute?
1. Quickly meet, agree on the amount of contribution/donation and bank in the money into “LCI District 308 B2 Haiti Earthquake Relief” of Hong Leong bank, account number 0130-004-2097.
2. For every RM3,500, one Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) will be awarded. The Club can decide who to receive the MJF.
3. Each dinner table is priced at RM1,000 per table.

Note: We hope many Lions Clubs in LCI District 308-B2 can join together by contributing at least RM1,000 toward this Haiti Earthquake Relief… each of us playing a small part to help the needy Haitian who are in need of food, clean water, medical, temporary housing. 3 million people have lost everything.

How can we (individual Lions) contribute?
1. Individual Lions can contribute by donating any amount of money.
2. Individual Lions also can purchase dinner tickets as well.

Attached
Attached is the Bank-in Slip.
After you have banked in the money, please fax or email the Bank-in Slip Form together with Bank-in Slip to Organising Co-Chairperson, RC Jean Teoh. tsc@bkzbikerz.com or Fax: 03-8060 7857. Contact her at 016-2121889,
We will acknowledge receipt of money by posting it at the LCI District 308-B2 website.

Thank you very much for your help and kind support.
We can do something to help the unfortunate at Haiti.
Sorry for any inconvenience….urgent money needed to help the Haiti earthquake victims.

Yours in Lionism,.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake was a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 Mw earthquake. Its epicentre was near Léogâne, approximately 25 km (16 miles) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. The earthquake occurred at 16:53:10 local time (21:53:10 UTC) on Tuesday, 12 January 2010.
The United States Geological Survey recorded a series of at least 33 aftershocks, fourteen of them between magnitudes 5.0 and 5.9
The earthquake struck in the most populated area of the country; estimates of the number of dead increased from 45,000 shortly after the earthquake to 200,000 six days later. The day after the earthquake the International Red Cross estimated that as many as 3 million people had been affected by the quake.

LCIF had mobilised USD650,000

When I was preparing the Press Release/Press Kit for the Press Conference 3 days ago, amount mobilized was USD350,000. Now, the figure had jumped to USD650,000.
